How to configure a router?
There are a few really important things in the configuration. It is a must-do step to take complete control over your modem or router.
1. Change Your Wi-Fi Name & Password
We usually see a random Wi-Fi name when we first connect to the router. You can keep it the way it is or change it with a proper name. Or, you can give it a crazy name. How to change it?
Here, I am using a D-link router to show you as an example. If you are using any other router, the options and the interface might be different.
- Follow the above steps given above to log in to the admin panel
- Click on Setup and go to Wireless Settings and tap on Manual Wireless Connection Setup
- Enter the name in the box next to Wireless Network Name (SSID)
The next thing you have to is, changing your Wi-fi password. This is one of the most important actions to perform after setting up your router. Here is how you can do that in the D-link router.
- Go to wireless settings and find Pre-shared Key field
- Enter a password that is easy to remember but really strong.
After performing both the actions, you need to save settings. You can find the button at the end of your screen. And, now let’s read the next important thing to do.
2. Change Control Panel Password of Your Router
People usually think that router passwords and Wi-fi passwords are the same. No! Both of them are different. A router password is the one you use to access your admin account. You used one of the default credentials from the table above. So, you need to change that to a custom one. It gives an extra layer of security to your network. Here is how you can do that:
- Go to the tools or maintenance settings page.
- Click on Admin from the sidebar
- There you will see Admin Password heading with two boxes.
- Enter your new password and save it.
- You can even change the username.
From the next time, whenever you try to access the admin panel, you must enter this new password. So, please choose the password that you can always remember.
3. Parental controls
Parental controls can be used to block certain sites from opening, usually, as the name says Parental controls are used by the parents to protect their children from unwanted online materials or sometimes even websites that are malicious or fraudulent. How to enable this feature? Here are the steps for that:
- Go to the home screen of your admin panel.
- There, you can see the devices connected.
- Click on the device you want to set the parental control for.
- Then, click on the pencil icon that appears next to the device name.
- You will see the parental control option there. Toggle the button to enable it.
4. Update Router Firmware
Router firmware is simply the software that is embedded in the router’s external body. Firmware upgrades can be seen as the
equivalent of software updates in your PC or mobile phones. A firmware update may be needed to fix the unwanted bugs or
simply avail of new and helpful features. To update your router firmware:
- Go to the management or maintenance option in your d-link router
- Click on check for new firmware
- Wait for some time and it will show you if there is an upgrade available in the servers.
